When babies suddenly wake up from sleep and are in distress, parents are usually worried and try to find out the reason. Sometimes the reason is known, but at other times it can be a bit of a mystery. The theory behind the mystery is that babies wake up abruptly due to nightmares, which causes the baby to wake up with fright suddenly. Parents are usually confused and want to know do babies have nightmares?

Do babies have nightmares

It is a common phenomenon in children aged between 7 months to 8 years old. A child who experiences a nightmare may scream, shout, and cry in extreme panic. Their eyes are open, but they are not fully awake from sleep. 

The episode usually occurs in the early part of the night. After the night terror baby will fall back into a deep sleep and not be able to recall the episode in the morning. This is true that babies do not remember anything upon waking.

Causes of nightmares

Every day of your baby is full of stimulation. Typical things in your life are new for your baby, which stimulates CNS. As your CNS is still developing it, every stimulation stimulates it, and excessive stimulation may contribute to the nightmares. 

Your baby experiences more nightmares if you have a family history of night terrors. Other causes include

  • Stress
  • Poor sleep quality
  • New surrounding
  • Sickness
  • Being overtired

What to do if babies experience nightmares

There is one alarming thing about nightmares that you can not do much for your child when they occur. It is difficult to watch your loved one suffering from a night terror, but do not panic and remember that your child does not remember anything in the morning. But there are some things you can do it for your child these areas follow.

  • Never wake up your child from the nightmare. It can confuse them and make it difficult to calm.
  • Watch your child during the night terror without waking up. This might not be easy, but it is the best thing to help your child.
  • Make sure no hurting thing is present in the crib, which hurts the child during sleep. 
  • Your child will calm down after a short period of time and resume their regular sleep cycle. 
  • If your baby has a history of nightmares, then make sure you know everything about his/her night terrors. Consult your child pediatrician. 

There is not much you can do during your baby’s night terror other than keeping the sleep space safe. And implementing routines that promote healthy sleep habits may help reduce the chance of your baby having a night terror in the future.

While night terrors can be stressful and, in some cases, frightening for the parent, they are generally harmless for your child. If you think their nighttime distress may be caused by something other than night terrors, talk to your baby’s pediatrician.
